Attending ALT-C 2005 - general information

What will I receive when I register at ALT-C 2005?

All delegates who have registered by the booking deadline will receive on arrival a copy of the Proceedings of ALT-C 2005, a conference programme, a delegate list, the conference abstracts, and a guide to conference facilities and the exhibition.


What is the ALT helpdesk for and where can it be found?

The helpdesk can provide you with all the information you need concerning your ALT-C booking i.e. what days you have booked, your accommodation, your social options etc. We will also do our best to assist with any other enquiries you may have.

The helpdesk will be positioned just inside the foyer near to the main entrance of the Renold Building.


What internet access will I have during the conference?

All delegates will be issued with a login and password to access a wireless network via Manchester University's network. An internet cafe is available for all delegates at The Fairnburn Cluster. The Internet cafe will be open from 0800 till 1800 on Monday through to Thursday. You will need your login and password (supplied with your registration details) to use the PCs in this area. We aim to have a conference helper posted in this room to help delegates, if not, a telephone will be available so that you can
ring ALT-C Help Desk for help.


Is the conference area wireless enabled?

Yes it is. We will provide full instructions on how to access this facility with your joining instructions.


Are there medical services at hand during ALT-C 2005?

During the conference the first point of contact for any first aid emergency is any conference helper, identifiable by white T-shirts, or the Conference Help Desk. If no conference staff are present, ring for Security based at the Security Lodge on telephone number: 0161 306 4999 or extension: 64999. All security personnel are trained first-aiders.

What is there to do in Manchester in our free time?

Use this map of Manchester city centre to locate many of the places mentioned below.

Manchester Arndale and Market Street: a huge selection of shops from leading high street names to stylish specialist.

Deansgate, King Street and St Ann's Square: offers designer fashions and haute couture. A short stroll from these streets is the pedestrianised area of St Ann's Square and the Royal Exchange giving a great choice of classical jewellery shops.

An array of restaurants can be discovered: Café Rouge, Frankie and Benny's, La Tasca, Le Petit Blanc Brasserie, Moon Under Water, Pizza express, Restaurant Bar and Grill, Starbucks and Zizzi.

Exchange Square and New Cathedral Street: the city's oldest pub, the Old Wellington, dates back to 1378 and is near to The Triangle shopping centre.

The Printworks is Manchester's 24 hour entertainment complex.

Chinatown: made up of myriad Far Eastern style restaurants including Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean cuisine.

Northern Quarter: Affleck's Palace is the Quarter's focal point specialising in clothing, hair salons, record stalls, clairvoyants and cafes.

Just off lower Deansgate, the historic area of Castlefield is a popular area for visitors and families. It offers spacious public areas amongst the Roman fortress, overlooking the canal, has superb al fresco dining and it is on the doorstep of The Museum of Science and Industry.
